The Republican Party was founded in 1854 by a group of anti-slavery activists.
The primary motivation for the party was in reaction to the Kansas-Nebraska Act which would have allowed slavery in Kansas. Horace Greeley is credited with coining the name Republican, which was first printed in Greeley's newspaper in June 1854.
