Topic: Identify Diode
Answers to Common Questions
How to Identify a Zener Diode
Zener diodes are silicon diodes that are specifically constructed to operate in what is known as the breakdown region. Normally, diodes self-destruct if the current is too high when they are reverse-biased. Zener diodes are optimized to con... Read More »

How to Identify Diodes
Diodes are found in many electrical devices. They vary in size and are found in everything from amplifiers to computer circuitry. Because there are so many types of diodes and recognizing their individual uses and properties is important, d... Read More »

How to Identify a Transistor Diode
A diode is similar to a water valve in operation; when open it lets electrical current flow through a wire and when shut it prevents current flow. Transistors, because they contain two diodes, can be configured to operate like a diode. Just... Read More »

Answers to Other Common Questions
Diodes allow conduction of electric current in one direction while blocking current from the reverse direction. Diodes come with colored stripes that help you read the value on the diode. Read More »

The cathode of a diode is usually indicated with a band. In the absence of the band, consult the datasheet. Alternatively, use an ohmmeter that generates more than 0.7 volts at low current (a diode checker) and check conductance. The diode ... Read More »

More commonly, the RED probe is on the banded (cathode) end of a diode, when the meter reads. You can also use a high ohms range (try around 200K) with a digital ohmmeter, not all have a specific "diode" setting. So test the meter first wit... Read More »

You can use an ohmmeter, but the polarity of the output voltage of an ohmmeter can vary from brand to brand. Find a known good diode, check it's resistance in both directions. It should be very much different as you reverse the polarity. No... Read More »
