In 1664, New York was founded by James, the Duke of York. Previously the colony had been named the New Netherland colony, but was later renamed New York in his honor.

The British took the city in 1664 and named it after the Duke of York. It's hard to believe the city called, "the city that never sleeps", had so many battles of the Revolutionary War take place there.
