In August 1945, the United States used atomic bombs against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after Japan refused to surrender to Allied Forces during World War II. Between 150,000 and 250,000 people were killed due to the bombings.
On August 15, 1945, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces. The bombings have been the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.
