i have used repair to make sure no files were missing, i did not lose any thing. However, if you are not comfortable, you can save them to an external drive, or use online storage, one such is mozy.com

Since the stuff I use daily (Office and Firefox) still work, although the computer does do some weird things, I don't want to wipe that drive clean until I have something else that will work, lest I be left with nothing. At least not right ...

Instead of doing a re-install, boot from your XP CD and do a repair. All your installed programs should still work. You will have to go to windows update and re-patch XP though.
