Unfortunitely mulch and such are prone to insects, that's why I only use pinebark chunks, still somewhat of a concern. There's not much you can do except spray occassionally with an indoor/outdoor bug repellent.

Put rocks for the first two feet against the house and that will be the spray zone. Then you can use the mulch after two feet. The termites will never make it to the house with two feet of rocks and spray in it.
