A:

Quick Answer

Air is a homogeneous mixture, not a compound. The components of a mixture can be separated once they have been combined; a compound is a new substance formed by a reaction between components.

Full Answer

Air consists mostly of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor and argon, as well as smaller amounts of hydrogen, xenon and other elements. Everyday chemical reactions, such as oxidization and combustion, depend on elements present in air. For example, oxygen separates from the air mixture and combines with iron and water to create iron oxide or rust. Iron oxide is a compound because it is a new substance formed through a reaction between its components, and its components can't be broken down into oxygen, iron and water once the reaction has taken place. Air, like saturated sugar water, is a homogeneous mixture with uniformly distributed components.

    Is air a compound?

    A:

Air is a mixture, not a compound. Scientists define a mixture as a heterogeneous blend of molecules and atoms in variable proportions, while a compound is a substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in fixed proportions.

    Is air a mixture?

    A:

Air is a mixture of various gases, water vapor, dust and microbes. All the constituents of air are mixed in any proportion and are not chemically bonded. These gases and water vapor are not uniformly distributed everywhere and this is why air is considered a mixture.

    Why is air invisible?

    A:

Air is invisible because it is a gas, and gas particles generally allow light to pass through them because they are so spread apart. Gases expand to fill any container they are in, as they do not hold a shape; therefore, it is usually easy to see through them.
