The bronchial tubes divide out into smaller passages called bronchioles as the bronchial tubes go through the lungs. The bronchioles have air sacs at the end called alveoli, which are surrounded by capillaries. Capillaries are small blood vessels that air passes into when it reaches the alveoli walls. The air goes into the blood and as the cells use the oxygen they produce carbon dioxide. The blood carries the carbon dioxide back to the lungs, and it is removed from the body during exhalation.
