Q:

What is volvox?

A:

According to Microscopy-UK, Volvox is a green alga or Chlorophyte living as a grand spherical colony. Each alga is equipped with two flagella and small red eye spots, and the colony is very close to what would be classified as a multi-celled organism.

Each of the alga within the colony are connected by cytoplasm, enabling them to move together in unison. Each colony has a front and rear end, and the red eye spots are more developed on the alga in the northern region. This colony feature helps the alga progressively swim towards light. Volvox like warm temperatures and clean, nutrient-rich water. Using a plankton net is the best way to find Volvox, and they can also be collected by squeezing pond scum from near the surface.
