A college football team must win six games when playing a 12-game schedule, seven games if playing a 13-game season or must be the champion of its conference for bowl eligibility. The school must also not be on probation with a prohibition keeping the team from postseason play.
The win total may include one Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent, provided that school hands out a minimum of 56.7 scholarships. Teams with two or more wins over FCS schools must win an additional game for each FCS win. As of 2014, there are 70 bowl slots available to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. While meeting the win requirement does not guarantee placement, when less than 70 teams meet the requirements, a six-tier tie-breaking process is used to determine the remaining berths.Learn More
