Bartman attended the National League Championship game that took place between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins at Chicago's Wrigley Field on October 14, 2003. This would be his last visit to Wrigley Field, however, as he made many enemies with Cubs fans around the world. The incident took place in the eighth inning where the Cubs were leading 3-0. One of the Marlins players went up to bat and hit a foul ball. As Cubs outfielder Moises Alou went to catch it, Barman reached out and interfered with the ball. This interference allowed the Marlins to score eight runs in that inning and win the game which knocked the Cubs out of the playoffs.
