Although in many ways modern society is more productive because of computers, users must now work toward solving the problems caused by the prevalence of computers. Computers have streamlined office work and factory production and eliminated some occupational hazards because they can handle many repetitive tasks. They have also, however, caused loss of jobs because fewer workers are needed to perform some tasks.

While students have better and easier access to information, the use of computers in schools makes cheating and bullying easier. While relying on computers makes school work easier to read, the benefits of learning new information through handwritten notes are diminished. Likewise, proofreading skills suffer or develop more slowly because it’s easier to rely on spellcheckers and grammar checkers, even though they are often wrong.

Theft and invasion of privacy are perhaps the greatest disadvantages of computers. Computers and computer networks are routinely broken into by thieves who steal identity information online, such as driver’s license numbers, bank account and credit card numbers and social security numbers.
