Brighten your computer screen using a combination of Fn keys or the display button on your external monitor. Though an external computer monitor has a menu button for changing screen brightness, you can change your laptop screen brightness using the onboard controls. However, the location of these controls varies depending on the computer.
- Turn on the computer
Press the Power button to turn on the computer. Wait a minute or two for the operating system to boot. Log in to your user account, and wait for the desktop to load.
- Locate the Fn key
For an external monitor, locate the menu buttons on the front panel. Press the button, and set the screen brightness. For a Macbook, use the F1 and F2 keys to adjust the brightness. For Windows laptops, locate the Fn key between the Windows and Ctrl keys on the lower left side of the keyboard.
- Adjust the brightness
Look for a sunshine or light bulb icon somewhere on your keyboard. For Dell laptops, look for it on the up and down buttons. You can find the brightness icon on the F key on an HP Pavilion and the F6 and F7 keys on Toshiba laptops. Press the Fn and brightness keys simultaneously to brighten or dim the screen.
