Q:

How can you listen to radio stations on your PC?

A:

Listen to radio stations using your default browser or a media player such as Windows Media Player or iTunes. Though you can also play your music files in a media player, you only need a browser to stream hundreds of radio stations without the need to download a media program.

  1. Open your browser

Open your default browser, and visit the TuneIn website. You do not need to create an account; however, creating a new account provides a way to save your favorite radio stations. Other website services, such as RadioTunes, also provide free radio streams without the need to sign up. If you have iTunes installed, open the program, and select Music in the top bar. Next, click Radio, and select a station from the list.

  2. Choose a radio stream

Click Music at the top of the TuneIn website. Click the genre on the next page, and choose a radio station. Alternatively, browse for a radio station using the search field at the top of the page. On RadioTunes, select a station from the home page.

  3. Minimize the browser

Minimize the browser, and right-click the browser icon from your desktop, task bar or dock. Open a new browser window to continue browsing the Web. Closing this new window does not interrupt your radio stream from the other browser window.

    How do radio scanners work?

    A:

Radio scanners monitor specific radio frequencies, allowing users to listen in on police, fire and other emergency services. The simplest radio scanners tune to multiple frequencies, shifting between them until locating a broadcast. More advanced systems follow radio trunking systems that switch frequencies or even decode and receive digital communications. In some cases, users can follow emergency radio traffic from major cities using online scanners.
