Facebook, which was previously called "The Facebook," first launched in February 2004 and was available to students at Harvard. One month later, it expanded access to Stanford, Columbia and Yale. It wasn't until 6 months after that, in September 2004, that Facebook launched its famous wall, where people could write and exchange messages with each other.
During this time, Facebook employed a growth strategy driven by attracting new universities and college students. In May 2005, it offered services to more than 800 colleges around the country. In 2006, it moved away from the school model and allowed people to join via work networks. Since then, it has grown to provide access to anyone around the world. In October 2012, Facebook announced that more than one billion people around the world use the social network.
