Use the VLC media player to play an MP4 file on your PC. Windows does not offer native MP4 support; however, you can use a video converter to convert the MP4 to a file your media player recognizes. Alternatively, VLC offers MP4 video playback by default and is free to use.
- Download VLC
Go to the VideoLAN website, and download VLC to a folder on your PC. Afterward, double-click the executable file to run the program. Follow the instructions to install VLC player on your hard drive.
- Open the program
Click the Start button on your Windows taskbar, and click All Programs. Find the VideoLAN folder in the list, and click it to view the contents. Click VLC Media Player to open the program. In Windows 8, press the Windows and S keys simultaneously to search for VLC. Click the VLC icon. When it opens, check the box if you want VLC to download album art and information each time you open a file in the player.
- Play the MP4 file
Click Media in the menu bar, and click Open File. Navigate to the folder that contains your MP4, and click the file to watch the video. Alternatively, drag and drop the MP4 file onto VLC to start the video.
