Full Answer

Modern antifreeze no longer just protects an engine from cold temperatures. It also raises the boiling point of the water to enable better summer cooling. Most cars manufactured after 1998 require an antifreeze which contains silicate-free, organic acid technology. Too little coolant in a car can cause the car to blow out cold air through the heater and the temperature gauge to read cool. This is because there is no hot water going thorough the heating matrix, and the temperature sensor needs to be in water for it to read accurately.

  • Q:

How much antifreeze should be mixed with water?

    A:

The general recommendation by antifreeze manufacturers is to have a 50/50 antifreeze and water mix. Increasing the ratio of the antifreeze to water such as a 70/30 mix will lower the freezing point of the mix down to minus 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but it will also lessen its ability to cool the engine. A higher water to antifreeze ratio increases the ability of the mix to cool the engine, but the mix will not do very well in cold weather.
