Maggiore di quattro figli, Ugo Foscolo nacque a Zante, una delle isole jonie dipendenti dalla Repubblica veneta, il 6 febbraio 1778. Successivamente alla morte del padre, che esercitava la professione di medico sull'isola, nel 1792 si trasferì presso la madre a Venezia, dopo aver compiuto i primi studi a Spalato.
