Synthetic letovicite (NH4)3H(SO4)2 has been investigated using 1H static, low-speed MAS, and 15N MAS NMR spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out in the temperature range of 215–425 K. The 1H MAS NMR spectra show three different resonances.

The observed solid phase is mostly letovicite [(NH4)3H(SO4)2] and sometimes ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4], whereas ammonium bisulfate [(NH4)HSO4] does not nucleate at ... This underlines the atmospheric importance of letovicite, which has been ignored in most previous studies concentrating on ammonium sulfate.

The deliquescence phase transitions of populations of internally mixed particles of solid ammonium bisulfate and letovicite, having overall extents of neutralization between .60 and .75 and diameters between 15 and 60 nm, were studied using a hygroscopic tandem nano-differential mobility analyzer (HTnDMA).
