The Paiwan call themselves the "descendents of the paipushe snake". They revere the snake and, consequently, its likeness appears on Paiwan clothing and totem carvings. Eating snake meat is prohibited for the Paiwan.

The Paiwan tribe is centered with Mt. Tawu, scattering in radiation in Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taitung counties with a population of 60,000. Based on inhabitation area and culture performance, the Paiwan tribe can be categorized into North Paiwan, Central Paiwan, South Paiwan, and East Paiwan.
