Rabies is caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system. Domestic and wild animals are able to transfer the virus to humans via saliva in bites or by scratches. Early symptoms include fever, muscle weakness, tingling, and burning at the bite site. Advanced symptoms include partial paralysis, agitation, hallucinations, excess salivation, problems swallowing, and fear of water. Symptoms are treatable, but untreated rabies can lead to death.
