The chapters are only one division in the Bible, and the second smallest. Each chapter is itself divided into several verses, of which there are over 31,000. Each chapter is within a division known as a book, of which there are 66. The books are, in turn, divided into two Testaments, the Old Testament, which covers the Biblical stories of Judaism before Jesus was born, and the New Testament, which covers the stories of Christianity after the birth of Jesus. These highly organized, numbered divisions in the Bible allow it to be easily referenced and quoted.
