The city sits on 138.7 square miles of land. It was founded in 1701 and quickly developed into a hub for fur trading. Detroit became an incorporated city in 1815. It officially joined the United States in 1837 when Michigan became the 26th state. The larger Detroit metropolitan area, which extends for over 2,000 square miles, consists of the counties of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb. The 2014 population of this region is about 4 million.
