According to Joel Osteen's website, he began preaching through the encouragement of his father, John. John was a preacher and the founder of Lakewood Church. For 17 years, Joel produced John Osteen's televised sermons but never preached, as he preferred to stay behind the scenes. In January of 1999, Joel finally decided to preach his first sermon. Ironically, the same Sunday that Joel Osteen preached his first sermon was also the last Sunday of John Osteen's life. He died suddenly from a heart attack, and Joel took over his ministry.
