Spiritual health is a highly individualized concept that is measured by the amount of peace and harmony an individual experiences in his day-to-day life. Spiritual health fluctuates greatly by the amount of time an individual uses to develop personal spiritual values.
Developing spiritual health generally begins with an individual's desire to give life purpose and meaning through the internal examination of their worldview. For example, some individuals believe in one higher power that intervenes in their life when they pray. Therefore, these individuals spend time praying every day or week in order to foster their spiritual health. Other individuals believe that meditation, or silent focus on their inner being, is necessary for finding a path to enlightenment that elevates their spiritual health for the duration of their lives.
It is important to note that the definition of spiritual health can change greatly over the course of any one individual's lifetime. For example, a woman aged 20 might use yoga to maintain her spiritual health, and then use meditation or chanting to foster her physical health during her 30s. In her 40s, she might join a religion to help her transmit the concept of spiritual health to her children and to preserve her spiritual health throughout the rest of her life.
