We’ve already mentioned that, even without proper red carpets or stars being showered in paparazzi flashbulbs, awards season is underway.
We’ll have to wait until April 25 to be able to watch the Oscars. In the meantime, there are plenty of other awards shows to keep us busy and give us an idea of 2020’s most indispensable titles. The Independent Spirit Awards already announced its nominees. The Critics Choice Awards will unveil its nominations on February 7 and will hold its awards ceremony on March 7. The SAG Awards are on April 4, and the BAFTA Awards air on April 11.
And then there’re the Golden Globes. Granted, the Globes have had their share of controversy over the years — mainly because the organization that hands them out, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), has only about 90 voting members. In comparison, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which selects the Oscars’ winners, has more than 9,000 members.
But no one can deny the HFPA knows how to throw a party. The unpredictability of the Golden Globes and the boldness of the HFPA’s emcee choices — Ricky Gervais has hosted them on five occasions and always managed to make headlines — certainly make this award ceremony a must-see. How will it be in 2021?
Who Are The 2021 Golden Globes Nominees?
The HFPA unveiled the nominations for their 2021 awards on February 3. Netflix lead in the nominations with a total of 42 — 20 in the motion picture categories and 20 in TV. David Fincher’s Mank was the film to receive more nominations with 6, followed by The Trial of the Chicago 7 with 5. The Father, Nomadland and Promising Young Woman all received 4 nominations.
The TV categories were dominated by The Crown, with 6 nominations, and Schitt’s Creek with 5. Ozark and the miniseries The Undoing received 4 nominations.

When Are the 2021 Golden Globes Happening?
The 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air Sunday, February 28, 2021, on NBC.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who presented the Globes from 2013 to 2015, will be back on hosting duties this year. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, they won’t be together at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, where the ceremony traditionally takes place. Each host will be in their respective cities. Poehler will be on the West Coast, live from the Beverly Hilton, with some nominees. Fey will be on the East Coast live from New York’s Rainbow Room.
Similar to what the Academy did with the Oscars, the eligibility period for movies has been extended. Movies will be eligible to get Golden Globe nominations if they were released in 2020 and up to February 28, 2021.
One of the main draws of the Golden Globes is that they award both films and TV shows, but the HFPA didn’t also extend the eligibility period for television. Shows will keep the regular eligibility requirements, so only TV programming released in 2020 will be eligible for the 78th Golden Globes.
What Else Can We Expect?
The HFPA has announced the children of director Spike Lee and producer Tonya Lewis Lee, Jackson and Satchel Lee, will be Golden Globe Ambassadors in 2021’s ceremony.
The ambassadors normally assist with duties on stage — like guiding actors after an acceptance speech, for instance. Those responsibilities could change in a year like this one when the ceremony will certainly be atypical. The ambassadors have traditionally been kids of well-known actors, directors and other industry professionals. Dylan and Paris Brosnan, sons of Pierce Brosnan, were Golden Globe Ambassadors in 2020. Isan Elba, daughter of Idris Elba, assisted the year before.
During this edition of the Globes, Jane Fonda will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award in recognition of her career as an actress, producer and documentarian. Past recipients of this honorary Golden Globe award include Tom Hanks, Jeff Bridges and Oprah Winfrey. In addition, iconic producer Norman Lear is set to receive the Carol Burnett Award, which honors someone “who has made outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen” — the television equivalent of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. As with other awards, we have yet to find out how these trophies will be presented in a socially distant manner.
In any case, we foresee even more surprises than usual during the Globes telecast this year.
Editor’s Note: This story will be updated with new information as we get closer to the Golden Globes’ celebration date and new announcements are made by the HFPA.
