The most logical explanation is that wild turkeys are abundant along the eastern seaboard of the United States, making it a widely available food that could be portioned out to serve large quantities of people.
While it is difficult to know exactly how many turkeys are sold for Thanksgiving, estimates figure that Americans purchase about 46 million turkeys each year in preparation for the holiday also known as Turkey Day. Some critics point out that the 46 million figure is based on total sales for the month of November, meaning that at least some of these turkeys could be used for non-Thanksgiving purposes.
